The relief is flat on the coast and very rugged in the mountainous region, in which some peaks exceed 500 meters in altitude. The municipality is crossed by several water courses, such as the Rio Gilão (also known as Rio Séqua, or Ribeira da Asseca), the Ribeira do Almargem or the Rio Vascão. In the municipality of Tavira, the three natural sub-regions of the Algarve are well demarcated: the coast, the barrocal and the mountains.
